“Catalog” means a list, a register, a reckoning

WALKING ON EGGSHELLS is even harder with only one foot, but it can be done, especially when it must. That’s another great thing about being imaginary: without the weight of a body dragging you down, there’s no need to bother treading lightly. All of your weight is emotional, and it may be a lot, but at least it’s all in one place.

Pity your friend, burdened with that pesky physical body. He can be seen. He can be hurt. Not you, though. You float above it all, always a witness, sometimes a commentator, but never a participant in the ugly reality of taking up space in a world where everyone seems to be fighting to take that space from you. Even when your friend yells at you, you don’t feel his harsh words vibrating in your bones. Instead, you archive them, add them into the mental rubric you use to assess what you see. His pain can’t hurt you, no matter how much transference he tries to affect. All it does is tell you who you’re supposed to be.

If you were to look at your archive, most entries would be short and boring, notable only for the fact that there are so many of them. You can flip through them like a card catalog:
